Stress has a negative impact on its subjects. It can reduce their attention, abilities and even their overall productivity. But there are ways that we can reduce stress. Exercise is on of the best scientifically proven ways to reduce stress. A little time spent stretching can release one’s tension and give them great peace. In fact, it is more relaxing than having a glass of wine before bed. How can stretching relieve someone of stress? Stress is a feeling of physical or emotional tension can originate from an event that can make an individual angry, nervous, or frustrated. Thus, there can be mental stress and physical stress. However, mental stress can have physical symptoms.

Stretching loosens tight muscles. When muscles loosen, they relax and this increases blood flow. Muscles are made of fiber known as myofilaments. When we stretch, the overlap distance between myofilaments decreases thus allowing muscle fibers to lengthen. When the length of the myofilaments increases, an individual’s flexibility is increased. Also, circulation of blood into the brain and other parts of the body is increased. Thus, an individual can resume their normal duties with positivity and even become more productive.

Similarly, when someone stretches, the body releases endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals that interact with receptors in the brain that perceive pain. The endorphins also trigger positive feelings in the body and improves one’s mood. The muscles are controlled by the nervous system. When there is improved blood flow into the brain, the brain can work faster. Also, with the release of endorphins that react with the pain receptors in the brain, messages of good feelings are transferred quickly to the muscles making them to relax and assume the stress. Thus, stretching will encourage a sense of tranquility and euphoria. While stretching the heartbeat rate increases. For non-athletes who want to just relieve stress, a 10 minute stretch is highly recommended.
